Ecological Survey

An ecological survey is an essential element of any development project, where wildlife, including protected species and habitats, may be affected. Surveys, whether it be initial desk-based studies or field surveys, are the first phase in identifying the wildlife resource of any given site, and provides a means of evaluating its importance, where necessary, on a local to international scale.

Prior to survey, a scoping study is often employed to define the nature and extent of the surveys required, and to ensure that all species/habitats that may occur within the sphere of impact generated by a development, are surveyed to the correct level using recognised methodologies.

Good planning and knowledge of the logistics and implementation of a wide range of field survey techniques are essential, as is the ability to evaluate the findings of any survey and to present the data in a manner that can be easily understood not only by other ecologists, but by planners, developers and other interested parties.

Our company provides expertise in a wide range of survey disciplines and ecology services, that can be tailored to meet the needs of developers wherever there is a perceived impact on wildlife.

We also provide practical solutions aimed at minimising impact on wildlife during both the operational phase of the project and in the long term.

Surveys are not only required in association with development projects, they are also often required where management work is to be undertaken on nature reserves and informal wildlife areas. It provides a means of assessing the potential implications of any given management prescription, and also acts as a monitoring tool, whereby the direct effects of management can be evaluated through the comparison of survey data gathered before and after management.

Specific services we provide include; great crested newt survey; reptile survey; bird survey; invertebrate survey; National Vegetation Classification (NVC); extended phase one survey; Hedgerow Regulations survey; mammal surveys, including bat; otter; badger; water vole; deer and brown hare.

Other services include; protected species licensing; great crested newt method statements; environmental impact assessment (EIA); habitat management plans; habitat creation and restoration; protected species monitoring and translocation.
